Mosquitos Got You Trapped?

Tennessee residents are accustomed to warm, humid summers and a nighttime atmosphere often teeming with mosquitoes. That said, learning to live with a problem isn’t always the best answer. Mosquito bites are unpleasant enough on their own. The itching that inevitably follows is the least of the issues. Mosquitoes are notorious carriers of disease, including serious ailments such as malaria and the West Nile virus. Prevention is key, but there are right ways and wrong ways to go about that prevention.

Personal Prevention

Mosquito repellent should be worn from dusk until dawn if you’re going to be outside, particularly in rural or suburban environments. If you find yourself a prime target for bites or live in a neighborhood with an intense mosquito population, wear long sleeved shirts and full length pants. Some experts also believe that wearing perfumes and smoking cigarettes can contribute to attracting mosquitoes. The simplest method of prevention, of course, is to simply stay inside when the insects are out and about.

Mosquito Control

Perhaps you want to go a step further, as many homeowners have done, and attempt to eliminate the mosquito population in and around your property. There are excellent, natural ways you can make the environment inhabitable to mosquitoes, and it has everything to do with standing water. Mosquitoes thrive and breed in standing water, so make sure you get rid of standing water. Beyond that, consult a professional pest control company about taking more extreme measures. Retail stores sell misting devices directly to the public, but these are unproven in their effectiveness and may carry some risks for those with children and pets. A good pest control company will address the problem without introducing additional threats.
