Why Do Mosquitoes Bite Some People More?

Have you ever been hanging with a group of people and noticed you’re getting more mosquito bites than the person next to you? Do you sit back and think why do mosquitoes bite some people more than others?

Well, there could be several reasons as to why. Something to keep in mind is different species of mosquitoes are attracted to different things.

What first attracts a mosquito?

Initially, the carbon dioxide we all exhale attracts a mosquito. But as a mosquito gets closer to you, other factors may contribute to their attraction to you. Things such as particular blood types, particularly type O, beer drinking, or pregnancy could all make a mosquito more likely to bite you.

What are some certain aromas or other things that attract mosquitoes?

One of the main substances shown to attract mosquitoes is lactic acid. Because of this, it is not a good idea to work out around wetlands or areas known to have a lot of mosquitoes. The sweatier and hotter a body is, the more likely a mosquito will be to latch on to it.

Another thing found to attract mosquitoes is Limburger cheese. The same bacteria that gives this cheese its distinctive aroma seems to specifically attract mosquitoes that carry malaria. This same bacteria is similar to the bacteria that grows between our toes, meaning that smelly feet could also be an attraction to mosquitoes. Other species of mosquitoes that are exposed to the same types of bacteria do not show signs of attraction though.

Why does it seem like mosquitoes are more drawn to some people?

Although there are studies to support all of these things being something that attracts mosquitoes, one thing still remains. Most of it seems to be genetic and if you’re a person who constantly gets bit the only remedy for you is probably to just wear bug repellent spray. Hope this helped you find out why mosquitoes bite some people more than others.
