Murfreesboro Brown Recluse Spider ControlBrown Recluse

Of the thousands of spider species currently living in the United States, the brown recluse is one of the most dangerous. Its bite delivers a potent poison that can cause open sores that, if left untreated, sometimes turn into painful necrotic lesions that take months to fully heal. In severe cases, the toxin can also cause a systemic response that destroys the victim’s red blood cells, ultimately causing nausea, vomiting, fever and rash. Due to the severity of the brown recluse bite—especially in young children—, I recommend getting these pests out of your home as soon as they are discovered.

Identifying the Brown Recluse

Unfortunately, brown recluse infestations are not always easy to identify. As its name suggests, the brown recluse spider is a reclusive species. It typically hides in dark crevices during the day and ventures out at night, often climbing into shoes, piles of clothing, bedding and other available hiding spots. Also, because its fangs are very small, many victims are unaware that they have been bitten until they begin exhibiting symptoms.

Since these spiders are so reclusive, I find that spotting a spider or two each week is often indicative of an infestation. You can identify a brown recluse by its long, thin legs which make an adult spider appear to be the size of a quarter. Brown recluses also have tan or brown bodies with a violin-shaped marking on its otherwise uniformly-colored back.

How to Protect Your Home

If you have seen a brown recluse in your home, it is important to know that these pests can be very difficult to eradicate using store-bought pesticides. The brown recluse’s long legs keep its body from touching the ground, thus preventing contact with pesticide-covered surfaces.
