Nashville Carpenter Ant Control

When most of our clients think of wood damage, termites come to mind. Although they are the most destructive enemies, they are not the only ones. Carpenter ants can cause significant damage to wood structures, and when an untreated colony grows large, the problem becomes more difficult to solve.

Identifying a Carpenter Ant Problem

Carpenter ants are about five-eighths of an inch long with darkly colored red or black bodies, narrow waists and bent antennae. Male and female reproductive ants have two sets of wings, but females shed their wings after mating. They tend to nest in areas consisting of damp wood like rotting tree stumps or moisture-damaged recesses inside homes. Even when you have an infestation, you may never see a carpenter ant; they work at night.

Brilliant Little Miners

Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not the eat wood they target. They simply mine it and tunnel through it to build their nests. Thier actions compromise the wood’s integrity, and a heavy infestation can cause serious and costly damage to walls and supporting wood structures. You may see small piles of wood dust called frass in areas where carpenter ants are active. Although they can inflict a small bite, these ants pose no direct threat to human health. If you find carpenter ants in large numbers, do not disturb them before consulting a pest control expert.
